Architect, not bystander

AI is coming for the work I have spent twenty-five years getting good at.

This is not paranoia. It is arithmetic. 2024 was the year of prompt engineering — find the magic words, get the code. The developer was still in the loop, hands on the project rails. Highest productivity ever! This year is vibe coding. It is producing an enormous amount of unmaintainable code. 2026 will be even more autonomous developers writing more unmaintainable code. The pile keeps growing. 2027 will be agent-driven code reviews. Better scaffolding to keep vibe coding inside the rails of good design. More agents, this time cleaning up after the others.

Each year's label says what last year forgot to do. Each year, well-meaning agents do more of the work I used to bill for.

There are two postures available to a person who has been paying attention. You can be a bystander on the wave that is reshaping how your kind of work gets done. Or you can be one of the people shaping what replaces you.

I picked the second one.

My cofounders and I shaped SynapseDx over a lot of conversations. One of them did the coding. The reason we shipped any of it was practical: we needed agentic engineers writing real enterprise code, and the off-the-shelf agents could not do that. We built things to use ourselves — on the basis that anything good enough to run our own fledgling company is probably good enough for someone else's.

Agents had to talk to each other. Talk to source systems. Take the ETL off our hands — the ugly part, not the rest of the job. Twenty-five years of it for me. Thirty for one cofounder. Fifteen for the other. Seventy years between us. The worst.

Yes, it risks putting me out of business. We are essentially building the thing that compresses the work I have spent twenty-five years getting good at. I am aware. I have not made my peace with it — I have decided to own it instead. Doing what I always quietly dreamed of: automating myself out of caring about the how, and into caring only that it works. That it is reliable. Compliant. Architecturally sound.

The wave is not slowing. The pile is not stopping. Neither are the curators — they are improving these tools every quarter, sped up by the same agents. Well-meaning agents will be doing your work soon enough. The question is whether they will be working for you, or instead of you.

I am still the master of my own domain. I have just learned to delegate. The agents are my new reports. Real management potential, there sir.
